Above Ground Propane Tanks: 4 Things To Know

Above ground propane tanks are an efficient and safe way to heat your Suffolk or Nassau County home or business.

Propane tanks can be used to heat your home as well as pools, power generators, fireplaces, and even dryers. Keep reading to learn the 4 things you need to know about using an above ground propane tank for your residential or business property.

1. Propane Service is Regulated to Keep You Safe

The use of above ground propane tanks is highly regulated to protect the safety of consumers and the general public. There are specific rules as to the materials used for the tank, the capacity of the tank, certification requirements, and even rules on prices that can be charged.

While a trustworthy propane tank delivery service will keep track of the details of these rules and regulations of propane usage, there are only a few specific requirements that are helpful for consumers to know.

Local Regulations

Many areas have specific rules and regulations for installing your above ground propane tank. For example, the Suffolk County code requires that any propane tank, above ground or below ground, needs to be at least 10 feet from any electrical device and 10 feet away from any property line

Tank Fill Limits

There’s a limit to how much of the tank can be filled, due to the fact that propane expands when heated. Above ground tanks are designed to be filled to 80-percent capacity. The extra room in your above ground tank allows the propane to safely expand.

Tank Certification & Recertification

Make sure you ask your supplier what type of tanks they use or that they supplied you with.

If you have a DOT tank, it will be certified by either DOT or NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency).  It’s first recertification will be required 12 years after your tank’s manufacture date.  Then require recertification every five years (after that initial recertification).

If you have an ASME tank, they are lifetime certified and don’t require any recertifications.  Propane Depot only uses ASME tanks in their installations.  These tanks cost more money but are the best option out there for safety and convenience.

2. There is a Range of Propane Tank Sizes

Tank size is an important consideration when purchasing your above ground propane tank. If your tank is too small, you may not have the capacity to provide heat and energy for all your needs. However, the larger the tank, the more space it will take up and the more expensive it is.

First, think about whether you need an above-ground or underground tank. The former can withstand the harsh Long Island winter elements, while the latter prevents from taking up any extra square footage on your property. Learn more about the pros and cons of underground tanks to determine which option is right for you.

Propane tanks can range from 57 to 2,000 gallons in size. The size you will need depends on several factors, including the size of your home and the number of appliances you need to power. Check out our guide for choosing the right tank size for your needs. You can also contact a trusted provider for more information.

3. Smart Tank Monitoring

As important as propane is to your everyday life, you don’t want to have to think about it each month.

That’s why some providers are taking advantage of innovative technology that allows them to monitor your tank levels remotely and deliver propane when you are running low, without you lifting a finger.

Propane Depot’s Smart Fill Delivery option is convenient and ensures you will never run out of propane. We set up a hi-tech Smart Tank Monitor that will alert us whenever your propane tank is getting low. Once that happens, we’ll schedule to deliver the propane right away. We guarantee that you will never run out of propane with our Smart Fill service.

4. Flexible Payment Options

It’s important to find a propane delivery service that provides reliable delivery and flexible payment options that work for you.
