At Propane Depot, nothing matters more than our customers and their safety. That’s why it’s important to read our propane tank safety guidelines thoroughly and understand the proper steps to take in the event you smell propane in your home or business.
1. Avoid flames and sparks
The first thing you should do in the event you smell propane is extinguish any other smoking material or open flames and avoid operating sources that can trigger flammable sparks, like cell phones, appliances, and lights.
2. Evacuate the area
Instruct any other nearby people to leave the home or building immediately for their own safety.
3. Turn off the propane, if it is safe to do so
It’s vital that you always know where the main gas supply valve is located so you can close it in case of a leak to stop more propane from escaping.
4. Report the leak
Contact Propane Depot immediately at 631-400-7283, option #9, to report the leak. If you are unable to reach us, call 911 for an immediate safety response.
5. Do not return until it’s safe
Do not reenter the home or building until a Propane Depot specialist or emergency responder indicates it is safe to do so.
6. Have your system checked
Your system should be rechecked by a Propane Depot specialist or another qualified technician to ensure there are no harmful leaks before you use any propane-fueled appliances or heat.
